Welfare Watch September 2025

In this edition of Welfare Watch, we look over a month which held a multitude of events.

On Merchant Navy Day 2025, we joined communities and organisations across the UK that flew the Red Ensign to honour the essential role and enduring contribution of merchant seafarers. Our team attended Merchant Navy Day events and services, commemorating those who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice to keep vital trade routes to our country open.

This month we also joined IMRF, Project connect and the Sir Thomas Lipton Foundation at LISW25 where we had important discussions on the role of charities in maritime. We were also joined by Captain Kuba Szymanski, Captain Sir Ian McNaught and Lola Fadina. All three provided there expertise in the maritime industry to highlight the role of charity in maritime. Photos and videos of the event can be found on our website and on our social media platforms.

Our Deputy CEO, Sharon Coveney, has been named a recipient of the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service. Additionally, we have also announced the reopening of MNWB annual awards until the end of November.

We were deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Peter McEwen MNM, who died peacefully on Saturday 6th September at the age of 78, surrounded by his family.

We also highlight the work of our members and our staff.
