Day of the Seafarer 2025

Today is Day of the Seafarer! The MNWB proudly stands in support of seafarers and highlights the vital role they play in keeping our fast-paced world moving. Their hard work and dedication are essential to global trade and everyday life.

Did you know that around the world there is an estimated 1.9 million seafarers, of which 23,000 are active UK seafarers and are all exposed to the hazards of life at sea.

Each year, the MNWB supports its 47 member charities who deliver welfare support to hundreds of thousands of serving and retired seafarers, fishers and their dependents. These keyworkers need our support. They are away from their families for months at a time, spend long periods at sea and get limited time ashore, which can affect their mental health and general wellbeing.

Did you know?

It’s essential to highlight the vital role seafarers play in the world. Seafaring is among the most hazardous professions in the world, and without seafarers, we wouldn’t have access to many of our daily essentials – such as food, drink and other comforts.

The Day of the Seafarer recognises the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy and civil society as a whole.

This year, the International Maritime Organization launched the campaign ‘My Harassment-Free Ship‘, a bold initiative to promote a culture of respect and zero tolerance for bullying and harassment at sea.

The campaign is about changing the maritime culture to one where every seafarer feels safe, valued, and protected at sea.

The three key pillars of the campaign are:

  • Seafarers: Share your stories and be part of the movement.
  • Shipping Companies: Strengthen policies and onboard training.
  • Maritime Organisations: Support and advocate for seafarers’ rights.

Gordon Foot, MNWB ambassador, shares an insight into his role as a seafarer

We recently connected with one of our ambassadors, Gordon Foot, an active serving seafarer and a dedicated maritime professional whose career at sea has spanned both military and commercial sectors. His story is one of adventure, purpose, and passion for the ocean.

Gordon’s journey began in submarines with the Royal Navy, where he spent the first half of his career. The experience was challenging and formative, instilling a strong sense of discipline and resilience. Later, he transitioned into the Merchant Navy, where he found his calling in maritime construction within the offshore industry.

Today, Gordon plays a key role in offshore operations, contributing to vital projects such as oil and gas exploration, environmental programmes, offshore wind farms, and the installation of subsea power and communication cables. His work is highly technical and often includes underwater operations, making each day on the job both unique and exciting.

When he’s not at sea, Gordon is just as committed onshore. During his leave, he engages in outreach and mentoring. He shares his knowledge and enthusiasm with youth and young adults, encouraging them to explore the vast opportunities a maritime career can offer.

Gordon’s message to aspiring seafarers is simple but powerful: Be your authentic self. Be kind. Dream big. Stay motivated—and take the leap. He says ‘a life at sea isn’t just a profession—it’s a true adventure’.
Huge thanks to Gordon for taking the time to share his story and experiences!
