Christmas message from the CEO

As we approach the festive season, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been an extraordinary year for the MNWB and our dedicated network of members and partners.

It has been a year of collaboration, innovation, and unwavering commitment to seafarers’ welfare. From playing a key role at London International Shipping Week, where we championed the vital role of maritime charities, to hosting our Seafarers’ Welfare Conference in Southampton, we’ve brought together voices from across the sector to shape the future of welfare provision. These events highlighted themes such as sustainability and the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in supporting those who work at sea – themes that will define our work for years to come.

We’ve continued to deliver practical support through initiatives like the Vehicle Replacement Programme and MiFi, helping welfare charities reach seafarers more effectively; and we’ve delivered thousands of training hours to strengthen skills across the network. Our grant funding programme has supported numerous projects that make a real difference to the lives of seafarers and their families, but we want to do more.

One moment that stands out for me this year was during a visit to a Port Welfare Committee, where I saw first-hand how collaboration between local charities, port owners, MCA, agents and unions ensures seafarers have access to essential services. It reminded me that welfare is strongest when communities work together and we need to continue supporting these collaborations to bring about positive change.

Another highlight is seeing the range of innovative stakeholder projects we can support thanks to the funding we receive from the Department for Transport and other funders. Whether that’s a new vehicle to transport seafarers, new windows for one of our accommodation providers, or the refurbishment of a seafarers’ centre to create a safe and comfortable space, it’s often these simple, human touches that make the biggest difference to the lives of others.

This year also saw the renewal of our formal agreement with the MCA to reaffirm our commitment to seafarers and fishers across the UK in our role as the National Seafarers’ Welfare Board. Our mission remains as vital as ever. We take our duty seriously, but it is our 48 member charities in our network that deliver real impact.

Now, as we prepare to celebrate Christmas, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all our members, trustees, Port Welfare Committees, staff and all those who work tirelessly to improve the lives of seafarers.

Looking ahead to 2026, we remain focused on driving welfare standards, fostering collaboration, and embracing innovation – including Artificial Intelligence – to meet the evolving needs of the maritime community. Our focus going forward is sustainability, ensuring that the great work of the welfare community continues for the years ahead. We love working with and for you and we look forward to another year of service. With your dedication and our support, let’s make sure that no seafarers or fishers are left without support when they need it most.

On behalf of everyone at the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful Christmas and a prosperous new year. Thank you for standing with us in our mission to care for those who keep global trade moving.

Season’s Greetings,

Stuart Rivers
