Our Seafarer Support team took part in the COMPASS Jobs Fair on Monday 11th November.
Training and Welfare Manager Helen van Gass and Communications Administrator Roxanne Le Voguer represented the Seafarer Support service at the event held at the Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London.
Communications Administrator, Roxanne said: “It was fantastic to share what my Seafarer Support colleagues do for seafarers and their families on a regular basis. A lot of people who attended the event said they’d never heard of us, despite our years of existence, so it was great to bring Seafarer Support to their attention. Helen and I will just be happy if at least one seafarer can be helped through us being here and raising awareness today.”
Though like the name suggests, COMPASS Jobs Fair is aimed at people in social work and social care work who may attend the event looking for career development opportunities/latest industry information. Our team attends the event annually to make people aware of Seafarer Support and how it can help them.
Seafarer Support is the MNWB’s helpline referral service for UK serving/retired seafarers and their families. The team deals with a range of enquiries from financial/accommodation difficulties to arranging white goods.
How the service works is our team will receive a phone call about a UK serving/retired seafarer or the spouse/child/ care worker concerned about a seafarer/seafarer family member and they’ll tell the team what issue(s) they need help with.
Once details (which are completely confidential) have been taken, our team will arrange for a SSAFA volunteer caseworker to visit the client to assess their needs so they can be referred to the maritime charities best suited to help.
The team was delighted to share this information with social workers and social care workers who attended the COMPASS event and hope it will be of help to them in their work.
