SHIP WELFARE VISITOR COURSE (SWVC)

Course Outline

This is a two day course aimed at all employees and volunteers of Constituent Member maritime charities involved with visiting seafarers' on-board ships and in a port environment.  This is as equally valuable to Port Chaplains as it is to a volunteer driving the local seafarer centre minibus.  The course includes basic health and safety, understanding shipboard / port management and organisation, ship routines and protocol, potential seafarers' issues and seafarers' backgrounds.    An industry recognised ID card is issued on completion of the course.

Course Aim

To equip ship visitors with a full appreciation of protocol, personal safety and security issues relating to port facilities and ships.

Course Objectives

  • Provide an overview of shipping organisations
  • Introduce Marine Industry custom and practice
  • Describe ship types, shipboard organisation, trades and specific hazards
  • Highlight current security issues
  • Facilitate personal safety of people visiting port facilities and ships
  • Demonstrate delegate's suitability to operate in port facilities and on-board ships

Course Logistics

Occasionally the Board books a course in a hotel and will negotiate a special rate however please note that the Board will not book or pay for accommodation on behalf of delegates.  All accommodation must be booked and paid for by the delegate or their society and the Board will reimburse after completion of the course.

Course Funding

  • The Board will cover all course fees
  • The Board will reimburse accommodation and reasonable travel expenses
  • Up to £90 (£110 in London) pppn for a maximum of 2 nights dinner, bed and breakfast (no alcohol, newspapers etc)
