The arrival and popularity of the mobile phone has caused numerous, easily accessible, public phones located in remote port areas to be removed. Whilst this has not caused a great problem to European seafarers who have access to cost effective mobile telephone services, the majority of far eastern seafarers have suffered. To this end the Board has funded the capital and installation cost of card only, seafarers telephones in remote port locations and on the outside of seafarers' centres. This provides 24/7 access to telephone facilities. The phones provided by the Board are vandal proof and utilise the seafarers’ society low-rate telephone cards to ensure seafarers get good value for money. To date, with the help of seafarers' welfare societies, phones have been installed in Sheerness, Blyth, Immingham, Southampton, Pembroke, Goole, Tyne, Falmouth, Teeside, Ridham, Fawley, Avonmouth, Milford Haven, Port Talbot and more phones are planned to be provided, subject to demand, in 2007.
