The Merchant Navy at the Festival of Remembrance
The Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall was a day to remember for the veterans and cadets representing the Merchant Navy. This year the Merchant Navy was proudly represented by standard bearer Brian 'Wings' Barry and veterans; Peter Coleman-Wilson, Leicester Sneddon, Tony Aldred and Ron Quested. For the first time, cadets from the Warsash Maritime Academy were also included as part of the Merchant Navy contingent. Representing the current generation of seafarers at the Festival were Chris Powell, Will Bishop, Amy MacDonald and Graham Harvey.
As in previous years, the Board recruited and funded the travel cost of those who attended. All the veterans must have served during World War II, another subsequent conflict involving the UK, or in a war zone, for example during the Iran, Iraq or Vietnam wars. On this occasion, for the first time for some years, cadets also represented the Merchant Navy. The mix highlighted both the past sacrifices and service given to the nation by the MN and also its ongoing role today. Both the Veterans and Cadets alike all felt deeply honoured to have been involved in such a prestigious event.
Commenting on the Festival, Captain David Parsons, Chief Executive of the MNWB said "This year the Merchant Navy was afforded an excellent position standing shoulder to shoulder with the Armed Services. This is the first time we have received such significant recognition".
The MNWB are always pleased to have the opportunity to support both our veteran and future seafarers by organising and funding the Merchant Navy representation at the Festival.
