MNWB Caseworkers Course Programme

MERCHANT NAVY WELFARE BOARD

VOLUNTEER CASEWORKERS REGIONAL COURSE

This course has been designed to provide training for all those personnel who may, in the course of their work, visit seafarers and their dependants in need of financial assistance. Delegates receive guidance on establishing eligibility for assistance, understanding Statutory Benefits, accessing funding from nautical and non-nautical charities and making home visits. It is available to staff and volunteers of the Board’s Constituent charities and from its Port Welfare Committees.

  • Ethics behind caseworking
  • Verifying service details, eligibility for help, research service & absence records.
  • Almonising - accessing the help of other charities
  • Statutory Benefits inc. Pension & Savings Credit - An overview
  • Income, expenditure
  • Long term care of the elderly
  • Managing a visit, volunteer safety, insurance & identity
  • Report writing
  • Overview of the day & conclusion

At the end of the seminar each caseworker will have: -

  • Guidelines to establish eligibility for assistance.
  • A working understanding of the benefits available to those seeking help.
  • Knowledge of how to access funds from non-seafaring charities.
  • A greater understanding of the skills required when conducting a visit to an applicant or beneficiary.
