John Knight receives MNWB Award for Services to Seafarers' Welfare
Tue 25 Sep 2007
John Knight’s involvement in seafarers’ welfare stretches back some 30 years. He first became involved at that time with the Tees Area Ports Welfare and for many years has been its Chairman. At around the same time John became involved with the German Seamen’s Mission. The future looked far from bright for these organisations but through John’s good offices, as Chairman of both the local and welfare committees, the short and medium term future are now secure.
Within the past 10 years, John’s commitment to seafarers has been extended through membership and chairmanship (the latter until 2006) of the Mission to Seafarers South Tees Station. John Knight has been pivotal in the activities of all three seafarers’ organisations on the Tees and has also extended his commitment in the regional and national arena.
One of John’s most outstanding achievements was to guide through the introduction of a port levy on all vessels entering the Tees in order to help provide a sustainable income stream for those organisations providing seafarers’ welfare services.
