| Objectives / History | This Charity provides annuities for aged merchant seamen of Tyneside or their widows. It also administers 30 almshouses comprising of Tyne Mariners' Homes at Tynemouth. To be eligible for a pension applicants must have attained the age of 55 years or be incapable of working, have served at least 5 years at sea or on the River Tyne and be in need, hardship or distress and must live within five miles of the River. In exceptional cases annuities may be granted to applicants who do not have all necessary qualifications. The Institution also provides flats at the Master Mariners' Homes, Tynemouth, for seamen or their widows who have the same qualifications, regardless of rank or rating. |
