Objectives / History Financial assistance is given to retired or incapacitated merchant seafarers and fishermen, their widows and families, in cases of need.

Grants are given as follows:

Immediate grants to the widow and children of a serving seafarer who dies, whether lost at sea or not.

Regular six-monthly grants to elderly seafarers and widows whose circumstances justify continued assistance.

Special grants to meet particular needs.

To qualify for a regular grant an applicant must be on low income and able to show a minimum of 15 years sea service, unless this was terminated as a result of illness or disability. In particularly extenuating circumstances those with less than 15 but more than eight years' service may be given a grant. Royal Navy service counts towards the total sea service.

The Society operates through around 320 Honorary Agents. Applications for assistance should be made to the nearest Honorary Agent, or to the Chief Executive at the above address.
