Objectives / History

Seafarers’ UK was formally known as King George’s Fund for Sailors until 2005. Its primary purpose is to actively fundraise on behalf of and distribute grants to many of the maritime charities based in the UK.

The objects of the Fund may be summarised as follows:

(a) To provide support, by the medium of a central fund, for all organisations existing for the help, comfort and relief of seafarers and their dependants.

(b) To maintain an effective fundraising organisation, efficient financial management and proper scrutiny of grant applications in order to ensure that monies subscribed for the benefit of seafarers are invested and distributed to the best advantage.

Note: The Fund does not normally make grants directly to individuals. However seafarers and their dependants can be advised of the front-line charity best suited to help with their own particular difficulties.

The Fund is controlled by a General Council, which is representative of sll sectors of the maritime world as necessary professional competences.

All applications for grants are given careful consideration by the Distribution Committee before final approval by the General Council.

Main grants are awarded biannually in July and December.  The small Grants programme (<5k) operates throughout the year, while emergency grants can be made at any time in dire necessity.

Societies wishing to be considered for grants should apply in accordance with the instructions and forms on the website.
