| Objectives / History | Seafarers’ UK is formally known as King George’s Fund for Sailors. Its primary purpose is to actively fundraise on behalf of and distribute grants to many of the maritime charities based in the UK. The objects of the Fund may be summarised as follows: (a) To provide support, by the medium of a central fund, for all organisations existing for the help, comfort and relief of seafarers and their dependants. (b) To maintain an effective fundraising organisation, efficient financial management and proper scrutiny of grant applications in order to ensure that monies subscribed for the benefit of seafarers are invested and distributed to the best advantage. Note: The Fund is not allowed by its Charter to make grants directly to individuals. Seafarers and their dependants can be advised of the Society best suited to help with their own particular difficulties. The Fund is controlled by a General Council, which is fully' representative of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Naval Reserve, the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleet and of the shipowners. All applications for grants are given careful consideration by the Distribution Committee and approved by the General Council. The main allocation of grants is made in December for use during the following year. Emergency or interim grants can be made at any time if the necessity arises Societies wishing to be considered for grants may send an application form any time after the end of April. Completed forms should be returned by 1st August. |
