Objectives / History

Includes the Leith Aged Mariners’ Fund

The ministry is conducted by an international network of full-time, auxiliary and honorary Chaplains. Some of the many services the society Chaplains provide are: ship visiting; counselling; spiritual guidance; hospital visits; prison visits; conducting a full range of Christian services, including funerals and the scattering of ashes at sea; transportation of seafarers and providing assistance, support, welfare and care in a varietly of situations. The society, including its locally incorporated bodies, operates at 100 ports in 30 countries. Seafarers Centres provide: accommodation; currency exchanges; refreshments; telephone and fax facilities; postal services; transportation; recreation and paperback and video libraries. Accommodation for retired seafarers is provided at Sir Gabriel Wood's Mariners' Home in Greenock, a care home serving retired seafarers which also has a specialised dementia unit.
