| Objectives / History |
The Society provides permanent accommodation and holidays to serving or retired seafarers and their dependants, after accident or illness. All ranks and ratings from the MN or RN, plus fishing fleets are accepted. The home is situated in the grounds of an estate which extends to some 200 acres, the accommodation is centred around Satchell Court and also includes separate houses and flats. Within the estate is a working farm, walled garden, amenity gardens, lake and woodland 'haven' for those no longer able to go to sea. Satchell Court has all the usual facilities together with two TV lounges, a library, bar and a main social hall with satellite TV, pool and darts. There is a Welfare Officer and many other provisions designed to make daily life as easy as possible and to encourage neighbours and residents to help and support each other. The accommodation comprises of: - Almshouses and Bungalows. These are unfurnished dwellings, designed with the needs of older couples in mind. The aim is to provide convenient and comfortable accommodation in a setting that allows residents to live independently. Residents are encouraged to make friends through the use of the social club. Each unit has an emergency call system in case of a fall or sudden illness. Cunard Mews / Anchor Flats consists of 11 flats in total of which 8 are ideal for single seafarers and 3 for couples. Residents receive the same support and services as the Almshouses / Bungalows. Five of the flats are located on the first floor and are best suited for those with no mobility difficulties. Every effort is made by the Society to ensure that residents are able to live as independent lives as possible although emergency alarms can be fitted on request. It is recognised that some residents require more support than others and meals can be provided in the main dining room. Springbok Radcliffe House This accommodation is designed for single seafarers. Each resident has a bedroom, living room with dedicated toilet and shower facilities. The residents receive all the support given to those in the other accommodation plus meals, heating, lighting and Council Tax. There are kitchenettes on each of the three floors where a resident can prepare a meal for themselves. Holidays are provided to serving or retired seafarers and their dependants following an accident or illness. En-suite guest rooms are available, of which three have facilities for those who are disabled. A small charge is made for partners. All these rooms are on first floor of Satchell Court but accessible by stair lift. No medical cover is available, other than the local GP and therefore guests must be totally self-caring, though carers may accompany seafarers. |
