Port welfare information leaflets project

Port welfare information leaflets projectMission to Seafarers, Sailors’ Society, Apostleship of the Sea and the new, emerging charity Centres for Seafarers and Fishermen’s Mission are the main providers of seafarers’ welfare facilities and services in UK ports. In Gibraltar it is the Mediterranean Mission to Seafarers and Apostleship of the Sea (Gibraltar).

To assist societies and ports comply with Maritime Labour Convention 2006 guidelines which state ‘Information should be disseminated among seafarers concerning facilities open to the general public in ports of call, particularly transport, welfare, entertainment and educational facilities and places of worship, as well as facilities provided specifically for seafarers’, the MNWB is producing Port Welfare Information Leaflets for selected ports in UK and Gibraltar. Thus far the following leaflets have been completed:

  • Aberdeen port welfare leaflet

  • Bristol port welfare leaflet

  • Cardiff port welfare leaflet

  • Fawley port welfare leaflet

  • Gibraltar port information leaflet

  • Grangemouth port welfare leaflet

  • Great Yarmouth port welfare leaflet

  • Hull port information leaflet

  • Immingham port information leaflet

  • Larne port information leaflet

  • Leith port welfare leaflet

  • Liverpool Port Information Leaflet

  • Newport port information leaflet

  • North Tees port welfare leaflet

  • Plymouth port welfare leaflet

  • Portsmouth port welfare leaflet

  • Southampton port welfare leaflet

  • South Tees port welfare leaflet

  • Tilbury port welfare leaflet

  • Tyne port welfare leaflet

  • Warrenpoint port welfare leaflet

Leaflets are being created with the help of the maritime community via Port Welfare Committees and are designed specifically for seafarers visiting busy UK ports. The project has already gained the support of many port authorities, such as: Associated British Ports, Forth Ports, Aberdeen Harbour Board and Bristol Port Company. The leaflets will be produced via MNWB Port Welfare Committees in collaboration with the societies, the respective port authorities and PWC member organisations. The Board is currently investigating the production of leaflets for the ports of Sharpness, Dundee, Leith, Montrose, Cardiff, Kings Lynn, Felixstowe, Harwich, Goole, Medway Ports, LPA Terminals, Pembroke, Mersey Ports, Belfast, Londonderry, South West Ports, Falmouth, Swansea Bay (Swansea, Port Talbot and Neath River), Seaham, and Blyth.

A dedicated webpage will be produced in the near future. It is intended that leaflets be considered for accuracy, amendment on an annual basis and reprinted as and when deemed necessary.
